Building a Brewery 4: The brewkit arrival!
English Version
Finally, the day was set for the arrival of the brewkit and we could not be more excited! But there were still a few things that had to be sorted out.
First of all getting our technical room up and running, which meant installing the fundamentals for our brewery: a boiler for the steam, needed during the brewing process; a powerful cooling system, allowing to chill our wort quickly enough and to control the temperature of the beers during fermentation and maturation; a Hot Liquor Tank, to store hot water; and, last but not least, the Reverse Osmosis water treatment plant! This was probably our most wanted equipment because brewing water (liquor) isn’t just normal tap water. It needs to be treated differently in order to meet the different specs for each beer style one intends to brew and having the perfect water for our beers is, to us, as important as selecting the most flavourful hops, getting the the best possible malt and choosing the most suitable yeast for them.
As for many other things in building a brewery in a 15-story skyscraper, getting the technical equipment installed in the basement (!) hasn’t been that handy either. But, with some ingenuity, a touch of craziness (like pushing the Hot Liquor Tank through the Europaallee and down the parking ramp, cutting a few parts and removing the technical room door to squeeze it in) and a lot of elbow grease, we overcame this obstacle. 😉
Following step, preparing the pipework to connect the technical room with the brewkit and the tanks. Despite the small space our brewery is taking, there is still an impressive amount of pipes needed to make everything work...nerd alert: we would lie if we didn’t admit that the Tankbierbar walls covered in 700m stainless steel pipe "artwork" has become one of our favorite sights!
Last thing, signing off the brewkit before its shipment: we drove up to the Johann Albrecht production site in Germany to inspect it, making sure it was how we actually wanted it to be. And yes, we were very pleased to check that nothing had to be changed! 😊
And here it was, the giant lorry carrying our brewkit up to our door! Your next question might be how we could manage to get it into the Tankbierbar: this is an issue we wouldn't have been able to sort out without the experience of our brewing equipment manufacturer JPT, their great team and our helpful forklift driver. So, once again, many thanks to all the precious support we got during this crucial phase. Admiring the brewkit in its place has become, as you guessed, another favorite habit of ours. Can't wait to put it in action! Stay tuned if you wanna be updated about the first brews!😉
